Contentment is not something that comes naturally to many today, because we live in a world that constantly tells us that we need more to be happy and fulfilled. In a world that often promotes materialism, contentment can be a rare and valuable trait to possess.
Contentment is a state of being satisfied with what you have. It is recognizing that you already possess unique and valuable skills, knowledge, exposure or natural abilities that gives you an advantage in life.
While it is important to set new goals, and strategize for greater accomplishments, it is important to pause often, and reflect on how much you have been blessed by God already. Take a look at your life, your family, career, business etc and single out the virtues and qualities that others admire about you. Recognize that every such good and perfect gifts could only have come from God (James 1:17).
Just like our opening text stresses, when you focus on what you lack, there is a tendency for you to become covetous. But when you reflect on what you already have, you will begin to develop a heart of gratitude and contentment, which will in turn open you up for God’s blessings in your life.
Therefore, take time out today to reflect on what you are grateful for. This can be as simple as listing a few things you appreciate about your life, your business, staffs, products etc, and strategize how to use such gifts and talents to serve others. This is an important key to living a fulfilled and productive life.
