Psalm 51:17 – The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Genuine repentance is worth more than a million songs to God; it is of a high prize in His sight. God wants to be close to us, as we see in many Scriptures, but our iniquities and impurities are a hindrance to this (Isaiah 59:1-2). But one of the most important facilitators of proximity with God is repentance.
King David had this revelation; little wonder he triumphed greatly in all his battles, irrespective of his human flaws. From our opening Scripture, we see that David recognized that God would rather have brokenness as a sacrifice, than burnt offerings; and it was this revelation which he practiced, that established the scepter of rulership in his house forever; while the scepter of rulership was taken from Saul, and he got destroyed because he lacked repentance. It is also very important to stress that repentance gives potency to our offerings and prayers; as giving offerings and praying ought to be a sign of our submission to God. That goes to say that, offerings and prayers without repentance are void.
So, as believers, there is so much to learn from these as we walk with God. The prize of repentance is higher to God than any form of offering, as God is not more interested in your offering as He is in your repentance. Therefore in order to enjoy proximity with God, you must cultivate a heart of repentance. Hallelujah!
