To another divers kinds of tongues; 1 Corinthians 12:10
This gift is a gift of supernatural utterances that comes from God through the HolySpirit directed through man’s spirit and manifests as a spiritual language, which is different from one’s native language. This gift is different from the believer’s prayer language of unknown tongues as seen in 1 Corinthians 14:2- For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
In this gift, the believer is given utterance in diverse tongues, presently or previously existing languages that he has no previous knowledge of. It may involve the ability to speak in foreign languages not previously studied or understood (Acts 2: 4-8). What a marvelous gift. The disciples originally may have spoken Hebrews but when they spoke with other tongues, everyone heard in their own language. This was the working of the spirit to witness to diverse men around.
The gift of tongues is for everybody. It is your prayer language and a product of both God and man. Every believer has a part to play in speaking in tongues for the Spirit gives you utterance, and you do the talking. Hence, if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit, you need to desire the infilling of the Holy Spirit and get baptized with the evidence of speaking in tongues. If you already have this gift, use it daily to establish God’s will and purpose in your life, the church, and on the earth.
