Love is the nature of God (1John 4:8) and the nature of the recreated human spirit. Thus, everyone who is born again has the nature of love, which means that every believer already has love within him. Though love is our nature, we need to walk in love, by way of showing natural affection to others. This is what we see in our opening text today, where the Lord Jesus commanded us to love one another.
One of the major reasons we fail to have natural affection for others is because we do not feel responsible for them. We sometimes get engrossed in the mirage of our own challenges or needs that we forget our assignment. This wrong consciousness can lead us to forget our position as helpers to the needy and the hurting who Jesus longs to touch through us.
The wrong consciousness of ourselves ultimately hinders us from carrying out our responsibilities and calling to this dying world. When we see the needy, the sick, the weak, we should identify with them as their helpers so we can act by the leading of the Holy Spirit to give the love required to change their situation.
Let us learn from Joseph who was imprisoned for the wrong reason, and could have wallowed in regret, self-pity and depression. Instead, he chose to show love and concern for other prisoners (Gen 40). His act of love would later bring him into remembrance, setting him up to sit in one of the highest offices in the world. His love life was instrumental to his success!
Therefore, be mindful of how you live, and be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit as you step out today. Let Him show you where, how and to whom your action of love can make a difference today.
