“Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.”
1 Kings 21:29
When we sin or transgress, we receive judgment. However, we see from the Scriptures that where there is true repentance, the weight of judgment for sin can be diminished, deferred, or totally removed.
The story of Ahab in the Scriptures is an interesting one. (1 Kings 16). Ahab sinned against God greatly by serving other gods and rearing altars for them. He even killed Naboth to take his vineyard (1 Kings 21:1-16). But amazingly, immediately the Word of the Lord came to him through Elijah, rebuking him and declaring his judgment and that of Jezebel, his wife, Ahab humbled himself in deep repentance before the Lord, insomuch that the Lord had to defer Ahab’s judgment from coming upon him in his days to his son’s day. How amazing!
This goes a long way to show that irrespective of the severity, true repentance can mitigate the effect of a judgment. In Ahab’s case, it deferred it. In other cases, it can avert judgment, like was seen in the case of the people of Nineveh. (Jonah 3).
Therefore, regardless of how many mistakes you have made and the judgment hanging over your head, you can receive mercy if only you will come to God in true repentance today.
