Isaiah 58:6
“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy .burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”
There are those who woke up today without any ray of hope or liberty. They are bound to poverty, captivity or to some infirmity. There are also those who are oppressed because of the colour of their skin; gender and tribe; financial or societal status. For these, we have been called to pray and act with God to supply help and strength for their deliverance.
Often times, helping the oppressed get freedom would involve insisting on justice on their behalf. Instead of keeping mute and looking the other way, our scriptural text today tells us that when we fast in obedience, we must also use our influence or advantage to defend and protect the vulnerable to the best of our ability. Glory to God!
Remember that your life of obedience to God will always play out as respite to the suffering of another, and as an answer to the question and needs of the oppressed. Therefore, choose to obey God when He calls for your separation in the place of fasting and prayer.
