Obedience is an activator of the blessing (Gen. 22:16-18), so no one can walk in the blessing of God without it. In the kingdom, to obey the Lord is better than any sacrifice or offering we can give, our obedience itself being a sacrifice. This is why pleasing God and obeying his instructions ought to be the priority in our lives.
In our opening text today, we are admonished to observe to do all the commandments of God, without trying to add unto or diminish from what is commanded. To add or reduce from the instructions of God is to give excuses for not doing the truth. It is making excuses for incomplete observance of God’s instructions.
We see an example of the danger of incomplete adherence to God’s commandment in 1Samuel chapter 15, where the Lord instructed Saul to destroy the Amalekites and leave no one alive including women, children and their livestock. However, King Saul did not obey totally, and when asked by the priest Samuel why he disobeyed the Lord, he gave excuses. This was the beginning of his fall from grace. God rejected him and he lost the blessing.
Therefore, if you desire to walk in the blessing in this season of bumper harvest, you must learn to detach yourself from anyone or anything that can stop you from obeying God to the fullest. It is in you to obey the Lord, but you must train yourself to follow the instruction of God’s Spirit to the letter regardless of how you feel or even the opinion of others. This is a key to a sweet and fruitful life.
